The school nurse coordinates a comprehensive program of health screening and education for all students. She works closely with parents to ensure that children come to school healthy and stay healthy throughout the year. She monitors children’s physical well being so that they are able to perform at their best every day. A complete record of immunization must be on file with the nurse before a child is permitted to attend school.
All children who have been absent from school for contagious disease must report to the school nurse before returning to class. Any major illnesses, including diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, heart murmur, allergy, TB contact, broken bones, surgery, etc., should be reported to the nurse to be entered on the health record.
If your child needs to have medication administered during the school day, the school nurse will need the following:
The medication in a container with a valid prescription attached that can be left at school.
Permission for Medicine letter signed by the physician giving the name of the medicine, the dosage and the time it is to be administered with the expected duration of the treatment.
The Permission for Medication letter must also be signed by the parent or the legal guardian giving permission to administer the medication. These forms are available from the nurse.
In the event of an injury, first aid is administered by the school nurse. The parents may be notified, if necessary, to take the child home or to the hospital emergency room. In case of extreme emergency, the child will be transferred by ambulance to the hospital and parents will be notified ASAP.
It is very important in case of emergency for the school to have a current address, home phone number, duty phone, and the phone number of another adult to notify in case neither parent can be reached
Throughout the school year, a complete health education program is provided for pupils in all grades as appropriate. The program includes:
Nutrition
Vision and hearing screening
Family life and human growth and development according to age and understanding of the child
Drug abuse prevention
Dental screening
General health and safety education as required by DoDDS
Scoliosis screening
The focus of health education is behavior – behavior that prevents disease and behavior that promotes health and wellness. The curriculum is based on accepted knowledge and practice in medicine, public health and social science and emphasizes physical, intellectual, spiritual, social and emotional aspects of wellness.
All material used for instructional programs is reviewed by teachers and administrators before use in the classroom. In addition, parents are welcome to review these materials. Parents must notify the teacher in writing if they do not wish their child to participate in any of the health screening or instructional programs.
